The payment page in Square Register combines various payment options, here including the innovative "Pay with Your Name" feature of Square Wallet, years before methods such as Apple Pay had emerged. The design challenge was to present all of these methods while keeping the interface very quick and legible for employees at the register.
To solve this, I relied on visual hierarchy to lead attention from the large total at the top, to the most common tender options of Quick Cash and precise cash amounts. Users are reminded they can swipe a credit card at any time, or manually enter the card number. Finally, the Pay With Square options, including a list of nearby customers, fills out the screen, which naturally scrolls to accommodate. In busy locations, new Pay With Square customers appear frequently. Rather than constantly risk mis-taps by immediately adding a new name to the list, I designed an "X New" refresh button to populate the new names, which appear initially in blue, when appropriate.
